Pheko is the brains behind the success of Zangwana. He also sings with Mogorosi also known as Makholoskop. Zangwana have released several albums including Mabaleng, Dineo & Respect. Ivory Sikepe of By4 needs no introduction in the music industry of Africa. Best known for releasing Township Disco & Afro Pop. Ivory has achieved an abundance of achievements in music from founding the popular group By4 back in the1990s which is still releasing today, to releasing an Afro Pop release titled ‘ Isoka Lakwa Zulu’ under Qwathikazi. In addition to other successful releases Ivory also teamed up with Penwell Kunene to produce, write and put the melodies to songs for Patricia Majalisa (Umona album), Umanjj and also SA’s greatest singer ‘Brenda Fassie’. Ivory also wrote the melodies for various Matshikos releases including Who’s Gonna Change this World, Watch Out & Peace In The World. The Peace In The World album sold more than 50,000 copies, Ivory wrote and put the melodies alone. In addition to the above, Ivory wrote some songs and melodies for the album Makhirikhiri by Splash. Ivory also worked with Umanji as a backing singer and in studio and off studio. Ivory has also worked with an array of other high profile artists including Brenda Fassie, Mercy Pakela,Bulie Arosi, Khanyo Maphumulo of the Fame Sarafina, Trompies, Nomuntu Kappa & String Quotate.
By 4’s latest album titled ‘Azikhale’ was released in 2022′ following on from other hit albums like Wololo Azishe, Vuma, Molweni, Tsala Yame, Inkedama, Piki Piki, Bhiza, Usizi and Nomtembiso. By4 also has an EP titled ‘Vhayafana’ which was released in 2019. By4 have also featured in many artists’ works including Oska Tee’s song – Superstar, Africantunz’s song – Dance Together and Honest Mlilo’s album titled Angel. In 2022 By4 performed in the UK for the first time. The show was very well received and supported.
Penwell Kunene was a huge figure in the music industry of SA before he sadly passed away in May, 2009. Some of his key successes included being lead singer for the popular group Matshikos and also releasing his own projects including PK Movement, On My Own, Crown and Penwell & Friends. This is just a small list of some of the things he achieved. Penwell Kunene was also a member of the iconic group Splash, where he is part of the Splash package and the right hand man of Splash including helping to write many of the melodies. He was also the mastermind who trained Patricia Majalisa on voice coaching. PK also composed most of Majalisa’s melodies including producing two albums for Majalisa Walimala & Umona. Penwell also composed the melodies for Matshikos including the album Happy Man.
Recently Ivory paid tribute to PK by releasing his unreleased works and released an album titled ‘Bambelela’.Ivory has also been helping to keep PK legacy alive by working closely with his younger brother Bafana Kunene. Ivory has also helped Penwell Kunene’s younger brother Bafana in music. This led to Ivory helping to compose and write melodies for a Bafana Kunene album titled ‘The Return’. Ivory is busy with some projects. Ivory was approached by other Companies to assist with this Genre of music and.as we speak Ivory is busy cooking some songs with other 80s Musicians and the Young ones. Expect the Single of By 4 titled “MAFIKIZOLO ” to drop soon. Ivory is also busy with shooting a TV series of Mzansi Magic playing the Character of a Woman who fight exploitation in Music along with Khanyo Maphumulo.
Ivory is a strong and humble figure in the African music industry . Ivory is also a very successful icon who works with and respects many other disco brands including being an inspiration for many up and coming music artists and producers. It is very evident that many look up to Ivory for coaching and mentorship with their albums by the similar sounds and melodies used in many releases from present artists and producers.
